actaully this filter can be seperate from the aquarium.
how its work..
the trash will silt and going down to the gate.
the gate will open as the trash is concentrate and close back as the trash is remove.
in my expirience..
normal filter have sponge that need us to change it often as to keep the water clean.
Changing filter medium is not really a good way to get a clean/healthy tanks. These medium contains bacteria which will breaks down nitrate (from excessive food etc) to create a balanced ecosystem.
If you have a fish tank, you know that there is no solid waste inside the filter.
